What Actually Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session? (And Will I Be in Control?)
If you’ve been curious about hypnotherapy but felt a little unsure about what it actually involves, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions I hear from new clients — and honestly, it makes complete sense to wonder.
We’ve all seen stage hypnosis on TV, where people cluck like chickens or forget their own names. That’s entertainment, not therapy. Clinical hypnotherapy is something entirely different — and once people experience it, they’re usually surprised by how calm, clear and in control they feel throughout.
So let me walk you through what actually happens.
First — what is hypnotherapy, really?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that uses a deeply relaxed state of focused awareness to access the subconscious mind — the part of you where habits, beliefs, emotional patterns and automatic responses are stored.
Willpower and conscious thinking operate on the surface. But most of the things people struggle with — anxiety, recurring patterns, emotional eating, fears, sleep issues — are rooted much deeper than that. Hypnotherapy allows us to work at the source, not just the symptom.
What does a session with me look like?
Every session is personalised, but here’s a general sense of what to expect when you work with me:
1. We start with a conversation.
We’ll talk about what brought you here, what you’d like to feel or experience differently, and any questions you have. This isn’t rushed. It’s important that you feel comfortable and clear before we begin.
2. I guide you into a relaxed state.
Using gentle verbal guidance, I’ll help you relax deeply — similar to that peaceful, drifty space just before you fall asleep. You remain fully aware. You can hear everything. You can speak if you want to. You are not asleep and you are not unconscious.
3. We do the work.
From this relaxed state, we access the subconscious — finding the root of what’s been holding you back, releasing the emotional charge around it, and updating outdated beliefs or patterns. I may also integrate other modalities here, such as Inner Child Therapy or Emotion Code, depending on what your system needs.
4. We close gently.
I bring you back to full awareness gradually and we’ll have a brief chat about what came up. Most people leave feeling noticeably lighter — calmer, clearer, more themselves.
Will I be in control?
Yes — completely.
This is probably the most important thing to understand. At no point during hypnotherapy do you lose control, do or say anything you don’t want to, or become unconscious. You are in a relaxed but focused state — and you can end the session at any time simply by opening your eyes.
Clinical hypnotherapy is a collaborative process. I am your guide, not your controller. Nothing happens without your willingness and readiness.
What if I can’t be hypnotised?
Almost everyone can enter the relaxed state needed for hypnotherapy. It’s not about being especially susceptible or ‘good’ at it — it’s simply a natural state of focused relaxation that we all move through every day (like when you’re absorbed in a book or driving on autopilot).
If you’ve struggled with meditation or find it hard to switch off, that’s okay. I work gently and at your pace. Many of my most sceptical clients have had the most profound experiences.
Does it work online?
Absolutely — and many of my clients are surprised by how effective Zoom sessions are. Because we’re working with the subconscious mind and energy, physical distance makes no difference at all. I work with clients all over New Zealand and around the world, and the results are just as powerful as in-person.
What might I feel afterwards?
Every person and every session is different, but common experiences include:
• A sense of lightness or relief — like something has lifted
• Deep calm and relaxation
• Emotional release during or after the session (sometimes tears, sometimes laughter — both are welcome)
• A shift in how you feel about a situation or pattern
• Increased clarity or a sense of direction
• Simply feeling more like yourself again
Some people notice shifts immediately. Others experience gradual change over the days that follow. Both are completely normal.
Is it right for me?
Hypnotherapy can help with a wide range of things — anxiety, sleep difficulties, trauma, grief, fears and phobias, emotional eating, confidence, recurring patterns, and more. If you’ve been trying to think or talk your way out of something that just won’t shift, hypnotherapy works at a deeper level.
If you’re not sure whether it’s right for you, I offer a free 15-minute discovery call. There’s no obligation — just a chance to ask questions and see how we might work together.
Ready to experience it for yourself?
I’d love to support you. You can book a session, join the Healing Library for $9.99 USD/month (guided meditations and hypnotherapy recordings to start with), or book a free discovery call to say hello first.
Whatever feels right — I’m here.
